Andrea Marcum • Arlington
Elementary School, K-5 Vocal and General Music "I believe that building relationships with students and their families is an absolutely essential part of the educational process. When a student believes an adult cares about who they are as a person, not just who they are as a student, they are far more likely to be engaged in the classroom activities. If a student has an unstable home environment, these relationships are even more critical. All our students are future adults, and it is our charge to prepare them to participate in our society, and their success is more easily facilitated if they have good models of how to form and maintain healthy relationships." |

"Today, teaching involves not only the ABC’s and 123’s, but how to be a gentleman and a lady. Students must learn government systems, economy and culture, but I try to instill in my students the moral values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. "The Hayes Panther Promise of Learn Daily, Laugh Often, Lead Respectfully and Live Responsibly is paramount in my relationship with students and athletes. Today’s students are the future leaders of our world and they will be taking care of me in my old age. I want them to do a great job at both." |

Mary Jo Smith • Tates
Creek High School, 10th Grade Health/PE "I love teaching. I look forward going to work every day. I believe that all teachers need to know their students on a personal level. Having these relationships benefits the students both inside and outside the classroom. I believe that it is my job to teach my students lifelong skills that will benefit them in the future whether it be fitness or health related." |
