FCPS Teacher Spotlight

Januray 2004

Cammy BaxterSCAPA Bluegrass, Science

“Learning occurs in many ways for everybody. Try new ways of teaching, even if you are not comfortable with them yet; students will benefit, and you'll learn something new too.”

Cammy Baxter

Jackie Forrest

Jackie ForrestArlington, Grades 4-5

“I think all children have their own strengths and as teachers it is important that we find learning styles and strategies to make each student successful.”

Karen HigdonDunbar High, Math

“I want the students in my math classes to like and appreciate math. So many say they are no good at math — even calculus students. One of my goals is to convince them that they can be good at math, but first they have to get past the negativity. There are so many applications of mathematics that no matter what they plan on doing after graduation, math will be a part of their life. They need to understand it. If I can only convince them of that, I will have done my job.”

Karen Higdon

Jan Lane

Jan LaneGlendover, 1st Grade

“My students not only make me a better teacher, but a better person. I hope I do the same for them.”

Jody CabbleBryan Station High, Social Studies

“I want students to leave my class as lifelong learners. I want them to be fearless and question absolutely everyone and everything. I want my students to understand that an education is their most valuable asset. Not only is it important that my students learn facts, I want them to learn to think critically. I also want to instill a sense of duty into my students. I want them to understand that a great responsibility accompanies the title of US citizen. The greatest joy in teaching comes from the knowledge that you have helped to create productive and engaged citizens.”
