FCPS Teacher Spotlight

February 2002

Juaacklyn Cunningham—3rd year of teaching,  Picadome, P-2

"In my classroom I try to make learning fun. We take a hands-on approach to learning and solve real world problems."

Scottye Eakin—29th year of teaching, 24th year at Henry Clay, French

"Every year we have 6-10 winners on the National French Exam.  Last year we had 12. It's all about the students. They're what keep me coming back."

Sherry Howell—15th year of teaching, Squires, Grade 3

Favorite Quote:  "Children are our most valuable natural resource."  Herbert Hoover

Kathy Pear—23rd year of teaching, 10th year at Glendover, Grade 1

"I hope I have touched the lives of my children in a positive way and that I have been able to instill in them a true 'love of learning' that will stay with them forever. It is truly exciting to see children reach new levels of maturity in their development, both socially and academically, as they progress through each school year. Hopefully with this maturity comes the understanding and skill to be an independent learner."

Elaine Schneider—33rd year of teaching, Johnson, PSA

"The changes and the challenges in education keep me going. I am fortunate that Johnson Elementary, where I have spent 26 of my 33 teaching years, has afforded me the opportunity to grow and contribute to children learning by working with students and colleagues.

"It is my hope that students sense that all teachers, including me, are on their side and on the side of the best they have within them.

"Presently, it is my intent, as a Professional Staff Assistant to assists teachers in becoming exemplary and by helping develop empowered teachers whose teaching reflects best practices, initiative, achievement and innovative methods."

Carrie Widener—11th year of teaching in Ky., 3rd year at Morton, Technology Education

"I feel that students do best by doing! When student are creating with a hands on approach then I feel that learning takes place faster. I believe that students need structure to learn and want clear expectations given when in an educational environment. However I also feel the more creative a student is in their approach to learning the better. This also goes for the teacher. Coming from a Fine Art background I feel that the creative approach to problem solving is the most interesting.

"I enjoy teaching students that want to learn and are thirsty for education!"
